Writing 3: witnessing each other

         


I feel like throughout this course we have focused so intensely on the senses we experience on an everyday basis, and Infernal noise was such a complimenting writing to the class. Whitney wrote such a compelling piece of how music, or even just simple noise can be used as a form of political resistance. When I was reading I immediately thought of this, and though it was a bit of a reach, but the more I read, it kept adding more and more to prove the accuracy of my feelings. The infernal noise brigade was something I don’t think I had ever heard before, so I decided to watch a video of this marching band, and I was genuinely so shocked. The band performed such a wild and an all over the place performance, that it was so entertaining to watch and experience. Their sound wasn’t one that was necessarily enjoyable to listen to, but that made it more realistic to hear? It felt like a bunch of people angry about something, and trying to get a point across in the loudest yet quietly way possible. To me, this showed how music can literally be used as a protest and even a weapon. I feel like Shukaitis’s work connected extremely well with Whitney’s. The effective composition and aesthetics really described and showed the intensity of human feelings can also be used as a political practice. Even beyond or within that, it is clearly used for artistics purposes. He drew from concepts such as marxism, radical art movements, and something called affect theory. Before this reading I had never heard of that term before, but diving deeper into it and figuring out what it truly meant I had never related so deeply to a theory before. He argues that aesthetics is not necessarily just about beauty or art but involves things like sensation, emotion, and our environment can shape our possibilities. I really loved how this was explained, and made it so clear to me, and something I could completely draw into. I believe that these things should not be used as a decoration that we can just toss aside. I just find it so interesting that there are things we read and learn about that no one else truly knows. I would’ve never known this theory had excited, and been able to resonate so hard with it. Writings like these are so educational to us, especially as students about to enter into this world, and help us to have so many different thoughts, feelings, ideas, and opinions on the things we know and believe in.

 For my walk, I decided to do sense of smell and all of the different smells I encountered within my walk. Instead of doing 2; 20 minute walks, I decided to do 1; 40 minute walk. My sense of smell is definitely my strongest, and is a blessing and a curse. Some days it's nice to smell a salty air scented candle, or fresh baked cookies from the oven, but when I sit next to someone and they have on the most horrendous body spray, or the smell of food after it's been in my fridge and molded. Final Project Proposal

 Abstract: This project that I'm going to try to achieve is going to be similar to my project of "alcohol kills". I believe that addiction in our lives is such a huge issue, and I feel like it's truly not talked enough about. This project is going to be me going into public spaces and holding a sign that says "addiction kills". This is somewhat of a trend that's been happening for years, and I think it will be successful. This is a topic that I'm truly so passionate about and want to maybe even talk to some people about it. Artist Statement: I've known so many addicts in my life, and still have that continue to this day. Many of my family members were/are addicts and even went to jail because of the chains that hold them down. I think that our society points to partying and drugs to be something to aspire to and it looks inviting. Killer

  Final Project: I knew for this final project that I was going to do something truly meaningful, and something that I am connected to and another piece of a project that I truly enjoyed making. The title of this work would be “Killer”. In this project I chose to do another series to my last project which was Alcohol Kills. This project was kind of a blanket statement over everything that was said in that project, but I wanted this project to cover every addiction possible. I don’t believe that people know all the different types of addictions there truly are so I decided to do research and find out the highest forms of addiction in America. According to valleyspringsrecovery.com , Alcohol addiction takes over 2.6 million annually, nicotine kills 8 million people each year, 1.3 billion users, and Cannabis use disorder is 52.2 million.
