Project 1: Ephemeral, site, and social space
Alcohol kills is a project that I have always felt like I needed to do but never knew how to execute. People think going out and partying/ getting drunk and blacking out is cute. When in reality, blacking out is not a normal thing, it's a response your body has because it rejects alcohol. Alcohol goes against our every move in life and in our nature as humans. I chose to use a beer bottle from the house I'm currently dog sitting at, my family is avidly against alcohol because of how many addicts in our family exist. I chose to use this bottle as a sign, and document places that are dying or show no signs of life. This project is meant for people to see how alcohol may feel good in the moment, but the dying nature in these pictures is exactly what's going on in your body.
Hi Caitlin,
ReplyDeleteI think this is a really important issue to discuss. The culture of "blacking out" concerns me because the body is inching closer to the process of giving in to the poison and shutting down. So, representing the human life through decaying life forms shows how we dangerously ignore the sensitivities and limits of our own bodies. Also, The liquor next to the withering plants reads as an unhealthy need to escape a rough patch. In other words, the beer represents a false remedy to fix our problems. For example, the first image of the plant in the "I will survive" pot is ironic and is a direct jab at people who abuse alcohol for leverage. It really just paints a picture that alcohol worsens a bad situation. Imagine putting a plant in a bottle of beer and a plant in a bottle with water and placing it in front of a bar or store to see reactions. I feel like something like this could enhance the message you beautifully captured. Overall, I really enjoy the concept and the strong messages communicated.
Hi! I think that this project is very unique and how you decided to portray your topic was well executed. This is a very important topic, and I think that It's important to bring attention to the harmful aspects of something that is so common. Something that may push your project even further is including a video or photo of you pouring alcohol into one of these dying plants. I think that it would bridge and mix the two elements together perfectly!
ReplyDeleteHello Caitlin! I was very interested in this topic because I have never found an alcoholic I like, and I have always kind of gravitated to it not being a good thing to drink, because of how many people have died by driving drunk or become violent by drinking alcohol. I have always found this theme to be interesting, and I am glad you were able to use it in this project. I think pushing that idea of things dying around alcohol would be really good, with more muted locations, and more dead plants like dead grass or dead flowers would be interesting. Maybe also a video of you pouring alcohol on a plant and slowly watching it die would be interesting.
