cocooned vs engaged

My friend Sofia has become a body builder, and it's always been something I found super intriguing but I never had gone close to it. She invited me to a competition and I knew I wanted to think about this topic while I was there, we had to wait a couple hour for her to come on so I decided to walk around and listen to music around the conference center. n the beginning I was cocooned by my music and was listening to 4 different songs on repeat. "Constant" by Maverick city,"Every time you cry" by The Outfield, "Take it on the run" by REO speed wagon, and "Fade into you" by Mazzy star. These songs invoked so much emotion in me for some reason.

All I could think about was these people and how the think about their bodies on a daily basis, and they used to be just kids who didn't even know about body image. It made me sad that, they will do anything to their body, just for a medal. Once I took off my headphones, I got so overwhelmed by the sounds and the words of people judging them based on every inch of their skin and bones. It was such an odd feeling, and one I don't think I'll attend in the near future.

  1. Your insight and experience from this event were very interesting to read about. I never had interest in these types of events and had never thought of the potential negative sides of it. You mentioned that the songs you chose brought out emotional aspects for you, which I'm assuming is what led you to thinking of the harmful elements of this event. Do you think that if you listened to more positive and upbeat songs, would your view on the event have changed? I think that would be an interest concept to dive into!

  2. Hi Caitlin! I really love to hear about your insight and experience while you were invited there by a friend, and you are probably not familiar with seeing stuff like this, it was really a refresher to see. I also agree that it is really depressing how, in the past, these people were most likely kids who were maybe struggling with body image and are probably still struggling in that department, and it was probably weird to see all of this being someone outside the circle. From your images, I can definitely see that in some of the women who have fake smiles and kind of look like they might cry or something. I kind of want to know more details about the show you saw and why you won't go back, knowing what you saw. I don't blame you, but I just want to hear more details.
